Lake Travis House
Our clients acquired a 12-acre tract along Lake Travis in Spicewood, Texas, with the vision of creating a home that would gather family and friends while framing multiple views of the water.

The land is long and narrow, stretching from the street down to the shoreline, and its topography shifts from flat ground to gradual slope and finally to a steep canyon. We sited the house on the gradual slope: this placement allows a level approach to the upper floor from the street, while the lower floor opens onto level ground at the canyon’s edge.

Responding to the client’s request for a discreet entry sequence, we designed an offset driveway so that the approach from the street conceals lake views until a later reveal. Entry occurs through a compressed foyer that gives way to an expansive living room. From this room, one perspective reaches outward to the lake and its far shore, while the opposite direction frames the pool.

The home’s design establishes a strong connection to the landscape in every direction. At the center, the living room forms the anchor, with four limestone-clad volumes placed at its corners to create a cruciform plan. Along the east-west axis, views extend into quiet courtyards, while the north-south axis opens to long, uninterrupted vistas.

A sloping metal roof unifies the four volumes and central living space, with glass walls linking them to the surrounding environment. From here, the interiors flow outward to a lake-facing deck, side courtyards, and the pool. To meet accessibility needs, all primary living spaces are organized on a single floor, with vertical circulation—stair and elevator—connecting to guest rooms and wine cellar below.

On the north façade, a rhythm of glass and metal bay windows organizes the elevation. At the entry level, these windows open views from the primary suite and informal dining area; below, they frame lake views from the seven guest rooms arranged in cabin-like fashion. Each guest suite includes direct outdoor access, allowing independence and private connection to the landscape. A shared terrace stretches along the edge of the canyon, offering a communal overlook of the water beyond.
